This railway station was envisioned by Brazilian emperor Dom Pedro II as connecting the states of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. The work started in 1855 and the first part was opened 3 years later.
Train ridership declined in the 1950s with the building of the interstate federal highway connecting Sao Paulo and Rio. Now the station is used only by the Supervia, a train that goes to the urban suburbs of Rio de Janeiro.
