The building used to be the building of the National Congress from 1926-1960.
The building was built on the land of the old colonial jail, and it substituted the Imperial Parliment.
The Rio de Janeiro state assembly has 70 deputies. The assembly started in 1834. In 1975, the assembly moved from Niteroi to it's current home.
Rio de Janeiro is the second largest state in population (after Sao Paulo.)
