Poking up amongst the surrounding flat country side is the a small chain of mounatins known as the You Yangs.
The name is from the Aboriginal words 'Wurdi Youang' or 'Ude Youang' meaning 'big mountain in the middle of a plain'.
The granite peaks were probably formed by an intrusion of magma that burst through the surface, which would have been higher than it is today.
In May 1802 they were spotted by Matthew Flinders, who was undertaking the first circumnavigation of Australia. After coming ashore, he climbed to the top of the peak and named it Station Peak. It was later renamed Mount Flinders.
The area is now a National Park, with mountain biking, horse riding and bushwalking tracks. The track to the peak is moderate and well maintained.
Once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded by views of the surrounding landscape including; Geelong, Avalon Airport, Little River (birthplace of the Little River Band), and on a good day, Melbourne.
Don't forget to also look at the base of the boulder on the top of the mountain for the plaque in the photo.
