Built in 1911 at the terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad, Union Station is one of downtown Tacoma's shining jewels. When it opened, Union Station was proclaimed the grandest building north of San Francisco, its massive Romanesque revival architecture topped by a magnificent copper dome. The structure served train passengers into the 1980s but fell into disrepair as interest in railroad travel diminished.
In the 1990s, the City of Tacoma bought the building for just one dollar and renovated the station into the lobby of a new federal courthouse. The court is active on the lower levels of the building, while the passenger depot portion houses a beautiful collection of Dale Chihuly art - 4 glass sculptures and 1 painting grouping - that is a must see for anyone visiting the city. See the gallery for my pictures of the "Monarch Window" and the "End of the Day" chandelier.
