In 1883 George Ellwanger and Patrick Berry offered the city of Rochester 19 hilltop acres of their nursery grounds for a memorial park. The city declined the offer, but 5 years later, in 1888, community members convinced the officals to accept the land and Rochester Park Commission was formed. Frederick Law Olmsted was hired to design the park based on the nurserymen's vision. Ellwanger and Barry wanted Highland Park to become an arboretum, and they donated specimens of every shrub and tree growing in their nursery to form the core of the aboretum. Olmsted advised the city to purchase land along the Genesee River north and south of the city to form a park system. He also recommended Calvin C. Laney as Park Superintendent because of his expertise at surveyor and engineer would help in building the parks. Rochester is one of just four cities nationwide that boasts an entire park system designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. They include Highland, Genesee Valley and Seneca Park.
