On the morning of 9 April 1863 Peter Clark was slightly ahead of his (unrelated) mates James and Ashton Clark as they toiled up Warland's Range [catle droving]. He ran into Wilson [a bushranger] who demanded his valuables, specifically a watch he wore around his neck. This watch was a gift from Peter's bethrothed, just given him when he set out on this droving trip. He would not part with it; he feinted in passing it over, and seized the bushranger with his left arm. Wilson fired, twice, and Peter fell dead. In those intervening few seconds, James and Ashton Clark arrived on the scene. They overpowered Wilson, bound him and carried him off to custody.

Wilson was held in Maitland gaol, from whence he attempted to escape on 20 August by climbing the wall; but his blanket rope broke. "It has been stated that the behaviour of Wilson recently has been very violent"
- Sydney Mail 29 August 1863.
