The triple steeples of St. Louis Cathedral make it look like Cinderella’s castle towering over Jackson Square. The church, the oldest in Louisiana, was constructed in 1794 with funds donated by Don Andres Almonester y Roxas and reconstructed in 1851.

This lot had been designated by the French as the site of a church since the first platting of New Orleans. The first church was constructed in 1725 and dedicated to King Louis IX of France. That church burned in 1788. A second church was erected in 1794, as the cathedral for the newly-formed diocese of Louisiana and the Floridas. After the construction of the Pontalba Buildings, it was decided that the church did not have a grand-enough presence on the square. Most (but not all) of the original church was demolished, and a massive reconstruction took place, creating the cathedral's current appearance. More recently, the cathedral was designated a minor basilica in 1964 and hosted Pope John Paul II in August of 1987.

The interior of the church is surprisingly bright, with light streaming through the windows. Flags hang from the balconies; murals cover the ceilings; and the stations of the cross are depicted in the stained glass windows. Tours of the church are offered most days, but there does not seem to be a set schedule. Likewise, the Garden of St. Anthony, at the rear of the church with its 20-foot statue of Jesus, seems to be open irregularly. In the sanctuary, a daily mass is held weekdays at noon. Weekly masses are held Saturday at 5pm and Sunday at 9am and 11am.
