American Rock Salt Co. was founded in January of 1997. The Retsof Salt Mine, located 10 miles away had collapsed in 1994, due to an earthquake. American Rock Salt wanted to create a new mine, tapping into the underground salt reserves that were left undisturbed. They purchased 10,000 acres of mineral rights and 200 acres of surface property, secured the required permits and broke ground on the new mine in 1998. It opened for business in 2000. It is the first successful salt mine to be built in the United States in over 40 years.
