Shasta Dam was built in 1938-1945 and holds back the man-made Shasta Lake reservoir. It is the second-largest dam in the United States having been constructed with 6.5 million cubic yards of concrete and rising to 602 feet in elevation. There are 365 miles of shoreline and the lake can store up to 4,552,000 acre-feet of water; this water is used for irrigation, power generation, and flood control. The lake is also a popular recreation destination in Northern California, well known for its boating and fishing. The dam is administered through the Bureau of Reclamation, a branch of the U.S. Department of the Interior. A visitor center is open during normal hours and free tours are also offered. For tour information contact the Bureau of Reclamation by calling (530) 275-4463.
