The church
Ermita de Nuestra Señora Virgen de la Plaza - The hermitage of the Virgin of the Plaza is an 18th century building, although it stands on an earlier building (possibly Gothic from the 14th century). Only a beautiful carving of the Virgin of the Plaza of the “Andra Mari” type from the 14th century has been preserved from the earlier period.
The vault is hemispherical and structured by almost baroque ribs, which are connected in a medallion with the dove of the Holy Spirit, framed by eight small angels.
The building has an irregular floor plan and is inscribed inside as an octagon, the upper floor of which is formed by 4 narrow pointed arches and 4 wide semicircular arches that alternate. Inside you can see three altarpieces in a decadent Baroque style, almost Rococo, with Corinthian columns; the sides dedicated to Sts. Antonio and Saint. José and the central one in honor of the Virgin of the Plaza. The Virgin of the Plaza is highly venerated in Elciego and the patron saint festivities are held in her honor on September 8.
