This is Ferrovia dello Stato Venezia Santa Lucia, the train station in the heart of Venice. Immediately behind me as I took the photo is the Grand Canal; walking out of the station on a sunny day has to be one of the most spectacular arrivals that one could make anywhere in the world.
To the left and right of the spot where the photo was taken are the embarcaderos for the vaporetti (water buses) that you can take to most of the places in Venice and the Venetian Lagoon.
The station is very much in use. I was there on a rainy Sunday afternoon at the end of March; it was packed with people, and in the hour or so that I was there, there were probably 12 - 15 trains arriving or departing. There was even a Slovenian train departing for Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital, a journey of about 250km.
The station is the newest major public building in Venice, having been built in 1953. The church of Santa Lucia was torn down to make way for the station, hence the name. The two stone markers set in the pavement that you can see in the photo are a memorial to the church.
We were in town for a two week vacation. Sunday the 25th was a somewhat cold and rainy day; my wife was not interested in leaving the warm apartment, so I recorded this site while roaming the town. BTW, the cafe in the station is a great spot to have an espresso or cappuccino, and to watch the passing parade.
