Statue placed in this square on Gorée Island.
The island was declared a UNESCO heritage site so that people would not forget the slavery suffered on the island for 300 years and its sale of 3 million slaves (men, women and children) plus those who perished in horrible conditions, by the Dutch, English and French.
The statue is made of stone, placed in 2002 and is the work of MRS Jean and Christian MOÏSA. It is made of stone, on a black pedestal and are on a Djembe, a typical Senegalese percussion instrument. It represents a prisoner breaking the chains of slavery and a woman embracing him. Both black, probably Senegalese. The statue is as hard and emotional as the Island.
It is located on Battery Street, Plaza de Europa, in front of the old fort, now a museum.
Civil Right Type: Gender Equality (includes women's suffrage)
