Atri is a town in the province of Teramo, strategically located on a terrace overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Atri has been inhabited since the Iron Age, as evidenced by archaeological finds.
Atri is worth a visit for its pretty historic center and magnificent views. Among its points of interest are the 13th-century Atri Cathedral, the Baroque-style Church of Santa Reparata with its wooden canopy, an exact copy of St. Peter's baldachin, the Palazzo Ducale, the Municipal Theater and the Capitular Museum.
Built in the 14th century on the site of a Roman cistern, the Palazzo Ducale houses the offices of Atri City Hall.
In the palace today we can admire some sarcophagus covers and a frescoed nativity scene by an uncertain author. The painting is located at the entrance to the steps leading to the basement of the palace, where the prisons and torture chamber were apparently located. The solid wood jambs of the ducal doors and what remains of the furnishings were taken away by the Sorricchio and Pretaroli families, subsequent owners.
Recently some splendid frescoes of the country life of the dukes have been brought to light and the cloister of the courtyard has been restored and renovated, where meetings and concerts of classical, ancient and choral music are held, especially in the summer. Connected to the palace there is a splendid garden adorned with centuries-old plants, accessible from the outside or from the palace itself through a portico, below which there is the ancient Roman cistern, the remains of which were discovered in 1700 by Nicola Sorricchio. This same cistern is connected to other rooms present below the entire ducal palace.
