"Near Oisterwijk, you will find the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen, a varied forest area with atmospheric fens and hidden heathland fields. Wonderful to walk through. Everywhere there are viewpoints, and on one of the many benches, you can daydream by the ponds. Sturdy walkers can continue their hike in the adjacent nature reserve Kampina. Most of the ponds in this nature reserve were formed after the last Ice Age. Icy polar winds blew sand into small hills, which are still clearly visible in the forest today. Behind the hills, the blown-out basins filled with rainwater, creating dozens of ponds. A layer of clay in the soil ensures that the water does not seep away. An exception is the Kolkven, which was formed by the swirling waters of an ancient river. Other ponds remind us of their former use, such as the Brouwkuip, where brewers used to clean their tubs. The Brandven owes its name to the fact that firefighting water was drawn from here in the past. Others are named after well-known families or individuals, such as Speijckven and Van Esschenven. Thus, each little lake has its own atmosphere, its own nature, and its own story. Discover it during one of the many hiking trails through this surprising pond area full of winding paths and viewpoints. Saved from ruin A beautiful resting spot is the Van Tienhovenbank at the edge of the Van Esschenven. The bench has been there since 1935 and is named after Pieter van Tienhoven, a pioneer conservationist. He was a board member of Natuurmonumenten from 1907 to 1952 and played a key role in the purchase of the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen. Just in time; a developer wanted to cut down the forest and drain the fens to build a villa park. The local tourist office alerted the then still young 'Association for the Preservation of Nature Monuments.' The association purchased the forest area in 1913. Since then, nature has taken precedence here. It is the habitat for numerous special plants and animals, such as the marsh wolf's claw, bog myrtle, little grebe, and tufted duck. And maybe you'll see a kingfisher hunting for fish from the Van Tienhovenbank! Visitor Center Oisterwijk Visitor Center Oisterwijk is an ideal starting point for a delightful walking or cycling tour through the Oisterwijk Woods and Venns. You can come here for the most beautiful walking and cycling routes and excursions with the forest ranger. Behind the visitor center, the children can run wild in the OERRR! "
