"On the left facade of the basilica is the monumental portal known as the Holy Door so called because it is linked to the celebrations of the Celestinian Forgiveness, remaining open and accessible during the L'Aquila jubilee for just one day - between the evening of 28 August and that of the 29th - when the faithful who pass through it obtain plenary indulgence on condition of being "truly repentant and confessed". It is considered the first holy door in history, despite having taken this name only in the 15th century in emulation of the Roman holy doors.
The current portal was built at the end of the 13th century and is characterised by a splay made with particularly valuable carvings in which the link with local tradition is demonstrated by the use of pink stone. Above is a coat of arms in the shape of an eagle, one of the oldest and most precious symbols of the city. (Aquila means eagle in Italian)
The lunette shows a 14th century fresco depicting the Virgin and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Celestine V with the Bull of Forgiveness, issued by him in 1294, from which the Forgiveness was born."
