The text on the blue plaque reads...
St. Paul's
Memorial Church
Built in 1937, this Whare Karakia
is associated with
Wiremu Eruera Te Tauri who introduced
Christianity to Putiki in 1836.
At Sir Apirana Ngata's suggestion the interior
extensively features traditional carvings,
kowhaiwhai patterns and
tukutuku panels.

Christianity was introduced to the Maori here in Whanganui before New Zealand's founding document, To Tiriti o Waitangi was signed.
This church is significant due to its historical, cultural, spiritual and social heritage values. Built in a European neo-Gothic style, the exterior bears little hint of the rich interior features of traditional Maori carving, kowhaiwhai patterns and tukutuku panels.
