Traditionally a fishing port, Monastir is today an important tourist resort. It is the capital of the governorate of Monastir. The industrial sector, tourism and agriculture are the main activities of the population. The economy of this region is also based on agriculture.
1. Habib Bourguiba Mausoleum: N 35° 46.633 E 010° 49.753
The mammoth Habib Bourguiba Mausoleum sits at the northern end of Monastir’s cemetery. Its opulent splendor, topped with a golden dome, honors Tunisia’s first president after independence from France. Built in 1963, this funerary mosque houses the remains of former President Bourguiba and his family. Two slender 25-meter minarets are made of Italian marble, while the façade is covered in beautifully delicate tiles.
2. Monastir Ribat: N 35° 46.550 E 010° 49.994
Located on the seafront of Monastir, the Ribat is the city's most famous landmark. This imposing fortress was built by Harthama ben Ayan in 796 AD. It is one of the oldest Arab fortresses in North Africa. To the southeast is the three-story Nador Tower, from the top of which there is a beautiful view of the marina, the cemetery, the Bourguiba Mausoleum, the Great Mosque and the rooftops of the medina. A small Islamic museum now occupies the former prayer hall on the upper floor.
3. Monastir Marina: N 35° 46.675 E 010° 50.005
Monastir’s pretty seafront promenade (known as the Corniche) leads to the marina area, where pleasure yachts bob merrily on the Mediterranean. Local yacht operators can arrange Mediterranean excursions for a lazy day of swimming and sunbathing. Head here when the heat of the day has dissipated to enjoy the fresh sea air and sunset strolls along the promenade above the narrow strips of public beach to the west and east of the marina. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants with views of the Mediterranean in this area, so it’s a popular dining spot for locals and visitors alike.
4. Qaraiya beach: N 35° 46.416 E 010° 50.187
For many visitors, Monastir's main attraction is its stretches of perfect white sand. The town itself hugs the coastline, surrounded by beaches that stretch along the coast in both directions. Qaraiya Beach, near the port, offers easy access and free entry. The beach also has water sports operators offering boat trips, kayak rentals and other activities for those who don't want to just lounge in the sun.
5. Medina Souk: N 35° 46.379 E 010° 49.651
The souks of the medina are one of the best places to wander if you need to stretch your legs after a lazy session on the beach. Shoppers will find plenty of opportunities to spend their money here. The small shops and stalls are full of typical Tunisian handicrafts, from ceramics and leather goods to silverware, jewelry and carved woodwork.
