A rather unexpected encounter while being on holidays in Dresden.

Testimony to contemporary history - the Seidnitzer Straße civil defence bunker
Seidnitzer Straße in the Pirnaische Vorstadt district is home to a real rarity: here you can marvel at one of only three remaining DDR civil defence bunkers in the city of Dresden. This bunker was probably built around 1962 as bunker type SBW-300. The square bunker has an internal side length of 16.5 metres. Retracted walls and technical infrastructure such as water tanks take up exactly 15 % of the floor space. It was intended to provide protection for 300 people in the event of air raids. Today, the Dresden bunkers are the responsibility of the fire brigade. In winter, the bunker hill is popular with children from the Pirnaische Vorstadt neighbourhood as a fast and steep sledging hill. In summer, its plateau attracts barbecue enthusiasts time and again. In January and February 2021, the Bunkerberg was extensively cleared of trees on its flanks.
