The Observatory is named after C.E. Kenneth Mees, longtime director of research at Eastman Kodak. His pioneering work in the development of sensitive photographic emulsions is used in astronomy. The site for the observatory was donated to the University of Rochester by Caroline Gannett, wife of Frank E. Gannett, found of Gannett Newspapers. The Gannett family summer estate provides office space and sleeping quarters for observers. It may be rented out to Univeristy personnel for retreats and conferences. The Observatory houses a 61-cm Boller and Chivens Cassegrain reflector, dedicated May 8, 1965. The telescope was upgraded to computer control in March 2000. Rochester Institute of Technology's Center for Imaging Science is an active partner in the Observatory. The Observatory is dedicated to research, teaching and public instruction. Tours are available to the public on Friday and Saturday nights during the months of June, July and August. Tours are free, reservations are required. Call the University of Rochester during regular business hours at 585-275-4385 to make your reservation.
