About the Visconti:
"The Visconti of Milan are a noble Italian family. They rose to power in Milan during the Middle Ages where they ruled from 1277 to 1447, initially as Lords then as Dukes, and several collateral branches still exist. The effective founder of the Visconti Lordship of Milan was the Archbishop Ottone, who wrested control of the city from the rival Della Torre family in 1277"

About the Lodge of the Osii
"The loggia is organized according to a rhythm of five arches mounted on two superimposed orders. The ground floor is opened by round arches supported by pillars (replaced in the 17th century) with leafy capitals; the upper floor is marked by pointed arches and characterized at the base of the supports by a wide band with coats of arms in relief (partly redone), with the insignia of the city gates and of the families who had custody of them. In the center, the "parlera" (from which the edicts of the Municipality were read) projects, supported by brackets, with the imperial eagle in the middle between two Visconti "snakes" and the initials of Galeazzo Maria Sforza and his mother Bianca Maria. A pseudo gallery of small arches (in reality a sequence of five triple lancet windows) concludes the structure. The central one houses the roughly expressive statues of the Madonna enthroned with child and the patron saints of the city (copies, the originals are in a private collection). The stone facing is characterized by alternating black and white bands, according to a style (beyond the possible Tuscan influences of the architect) widespread in the Lombardy area already during the thirteenth century, which finds contemporary comparisons in the (lost) façade of S. Maria di Brera and in the first phase of the façade of the Monza cathedral. The structure was restored at the beginning of the twentieth century (1903-04)."
