Puerta de Tierra

Credits

Land Gate

It has an enormous vault with two rooms for the guard corps and the officer's quarters. Above the vault there is a small parade ground with 8 gun ports. In the upper part of the door we can appreciate a matacaspa or saratana. For the defense of the door with grenades and artillery fire, it has a space for the descent and ascent of the rake.

The door is made of jabin wood, with iron sashes. In the front part there is a masonry ravelin that is protected by a reduced moat of 3 m deep. Originally it had a drawbridge with its rake.

At the moment it is under custody of the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of the State. There is a small exhibition room where we can observe replicas of Spanish weapons, as well as a great bronze cannon of French origin found on the coast of the town of Lerma. The entire area of the Puerta de Tierra and the wall that joins it with the Baluarte de San Francisco and San Juan, is used for a light and sound show called "El Lugar del Sol" (The Place of the Sun).
