CAÑÓN DE BRONCE

Sign

BRONZE CANNON

The 18th century marked a turning point in the history of the Spanish Empire, when Philip V (1700-1746), descendant of the Bourbon dynasty, inherited the throne. This represented the union of Spain and France under a single monarch, giving way to a rearrangement of forces in international politics and a period of Gallic supremacy in various aspects of life in Spain and its colonies, including New Spain.
It was during his reign that this beautiful cannon was made, cast in bronze and corresponding to the year 1732, as indicated by the inscription on the band of the butt (ring on the base).
The characteristics of this piece correspond to the General Ordinance of the Army of 1728, which provides that the land artillery comprises the following five calibers: 24, 16, 12, 8 and 4 pounds.
This cannon was found one nautical mile offshore in front of the town of Lerma (5 kilometers from Campeche City), where it remained on the seabed for more than 200 years, approximately 6 meters deep.
In 1989, thanks to the denunciation of the fishermen José de la Rosa Dzib Dzec "La Rosquita" and Francisco Cahuich Pox "Pima", to the authorities of the Port Captaincy and PEMEX, it was possible to recover this valuable *vestige, part of the Historical Patrimony of the City and of the Humanity.
