"Kelele means noises. This was on the site of old slave market. It was presumably named during the ti of the slave trade it must have be a source of considerable noise as name suggests:- noises of joy ana agony. Near to its demise the Market moved to Forodhani and then Mkunazini where it lived for short time.
Other narration relates the noise made by the EXTELECOMS machines whose building have been turned into Serena Hotel. Initially the building belonged to Sultan Baraghash who devoted it to Eastern Telegraph Company. Around the square are many other important buildings: Mambo Msiige itself, the Bushiri Mosque,
Old American Consulate later on used as WHO office, Italian Consulate that then came to be known as Beit El Salaam.
Next is the Netherlands House. The street from English Club (Africa House) via Kelele Square to Kilosa House was constructed in 1940. Once known as Suicide Lane because of its discom-fortable driving."
