One of several caves and crevices along the Devil's Den Trail in Devil's Den State Park in the Lee Creek Valley near West Fork, Arkansas. The cave was formed 10 to 70,000 years ago when Lee Creek removed the hillside's supporting material causing a 10-acre area to break free and slide. It is possible to explore the entire cave without the aid of ropes or other climbing equipment. The first half is relatively easy, the last is more challenging. The passage ranges from one to more than 10 feet wide and extends 550 feet into the hillside.
Since this is a sandstone cave, no stalactites or stalagmites usually associated with limestone caves are present. Cave life is limited because underground streams are not present. For the most part animal life is limited to spiders, crickets and cave salamanders. Bats are more common, especially in cool months.
Exploring these caves is relatively safe but caution should always be used to avoid accidents. If you plan to explore the cave, carry two sources of light and tell someone you are entering the cave and when you plan to return. Do not enter alone and do not disturb the bats.
Be safe and have fun.
