The entrance to the Western Wall is divided so that men and women must use separate entrances. When you have gone through the first entrance, where there is also a security check, men go to the left and women to the right.
The Western Wall is also called the Wailing Wall.

"The wall stands in Jerusalem's Old Town and is considered Judaism's holiest place.
The Western Wall plays an important role in Judaism because of its proximity to the Temple Mount. The holiest place within Judaism is considered to be the Holy of Holies, which was the innermost room in Solomon's Temple and the Second Temple, which was located on the Temple Mount itself.
Since the supposed location of the Holy of Holies is thought to have been behind the Wailing Wall, the Wall is considered today to be the holiest place where Jews are permitted to pray.
The name Wailing Wall refers to the Jews' complaints at the wall about the destruction of the Temple." (visit link)

Jews come to pray at the wall. Many hide a small piece of paper with a prayer in the cracks of the wall.
