Parts of a Chimney
Chimneys consist of three different parts: Base or Pedestal, Reed, Shaft or Tube and Crowning, Crowning, Capital or Top.
Description of the Chimney
This is an isolated chimney, the remains of an old industrial building, built - as can be seen from the chimney's typology, with a rectangular base and an octagonal shaft made of baked tiles - in the decade 1890-1900. The basic material used is baked tiles, which are a good thermal insulator. The height and section decrease from the base to the top, its function being to create a depression or draught between the inlet and outlet to establish an air current that contributes to combustion. The interior section also decreases, to maintain an ascending current to overcome the currents of cold air masses. Its construction is based on the use of steam from the factory.
These chimneys were a basic element of factories, which generated energy from steam, using the experiences of chimneys from the 19th and early 20th centuries. This construction has remained isolated from the accessory constructions that would have to accompany it in the production process, thus remaining decontextualized."
