"DASÍ BUILDING
Year of construction: 1935 (1936-1942)
Location: 5 María Cristina Avenue
Building located in a small triangular block obtained after the opening of María Cristina Avenue, a key route of the 1928 Interior Reform Plan to connect the Central Market with the City Hall and the North Station. It was built with a metal structure and has three floors for commercial use (basement, ground and first) and seven upper floors for residential use. The volumetry, with a strong vertical component, is fragmented horizontally to create a double-height starting point, an expressive and advanced central body with five differentiated floors, and a tower at the top, also with two floors. The dwellings, one per floor, are very similar in terms of interior layout, with all of their rooms facing outwards, except for the bathroom, which faces a courtyard that also allows ventilation and illumination of the staircase. The facade is symmetrical and, in it, two of its sections alternate and tighten terraces and closed flights to form a curved chamfer in the third, where on each floor a single hole grouped windows and enclosures pavés with thin panels of brick or plastered. Completed after the Civil War, hence the simplicity of finishes, it shows influences of the Madrid Cine Capitol and, like it, responds to models of Central European expressionist architecture, widely disseminated by German magazines in the 20s and 30s."
