The site of the former Hradisko Monastery is permeated by the spirit of a dramatic past. It has kept its unmistakable appeal to this day, even with the strictly Baroque monastery building now in place, which is currently one of the most important works of Central European Baroque architecture.
The monastery complex was founded as early as 1078. It consisted of the main monastery building and the Church of St. Stephen with a number of other structures, of which only the former farmstead and the summer refectory have been preserved. During the Hussite wars in the 15th century, the monastery was torn down, then rebuilt again and in the 17th and 18th century it received the Baroque appearance it has today. After the seminary was dissolved in 1790, the monastery was taken over by the army. In January 1802 a military hospital was established in the monastery. It is still in operation and is therefore the oldest military hospital in the Czech Republic. On certain days of the month you can explore the beauty of the local Baroque interiors and the monastery gardens with a guide. It is advisable to book a tour of the Hradisko Monastery in advance. The access to Hradisko is limited due to the operation of the military hospital.
