33 rail cars full of corn derailed, tearing each other apart, and spilling hundreds of tons of corn. No injuries were reported. Union Pacific Railroad officials had to reroute other trains until the spill could be cleaned up and several hundred feet of track could be repaired.
We arrived at this location, 10 miles north of Raymondville, TX, 6 days after the derailment. All of the cars had been moved and covered with tarps to protect the corn still inside. The wheels and axle trucks under each car had been removed and hauled away. The track were repaired and trains were running on the line again. One pile of corn still remained to be recovered. A guard at the site said the unspilled corn would be removed from the hopper cars, and then the cars would be cut up and hauled away.
