The Rio Grande River is the fifth longest river of North America and the 20th longest in the World. It flows 1,760 miles from the southern Rocky Mountains in Colorado and drops over 6000 feet before it meets the Gulf of Mexico. More than 2,000,000 acres of farmland are irrigated along the Rio Grande, with slightly over half in Mexico.

Visiting the Destination of the Rio Grande will require a 4-wheel drive vehicle or a three mile walk(one way).

From Brownsville, TX follow highway 4 east about 20 miles. When the road ends at the Gulf of Mexico, the last 3 miles will be along the shore. You will have to make your own decision whether to drive or walk. If you walk, be sure to take plenty of water. A bag for sea shells may come in handy also. Don't forget your camera and GPSr. Low tide is a better time then high tide for driving on the beach. Stay above the waves but on the wet sand. If you choose to drive down the beach and you get stuck in the beach sand, there will be a very heavy fee to pull you out, and your wait for the tow vehicle will probably be longer then the time to walk to the Destination and back.

When I made the trip, I was driving a low slung car. My only choice was to walk. I had several cars pass by me early in my walk. Only one 4-wheel drive truck came by in the last quarter mile. There was some river mud mixed in with the beach sand toward the Destination. You may choose to drive part way and walk from that point.

Good Luck.
