"The Monument to the Martyrs of Religion and the Homeland is a monument made of stone and bronze, in its architectural design by Ricardo Magdalena and in its sculptural work by Agustín Querol . The memorial is dedicated to representing the main martyrs of the city, both alluding to the Innumerable Martyrs of Zaragoza whose tradition dates back to the 4th century , and to those who stood out in the defense of the city in the Sieges of Zaragoza . It was erected in the Plaza de la Constitución, currently Plaza de España in Zaragoza , and inaugurated on October 23, 1904.

Monument to the martyrs of religion and the homeland of Zaragoza, work of Ricardo Magdalena and Agustín Querol (1904).
The memorial was initiated through a popular subscription called in the area of ??Aragón , which allowed the completion of a project whose first architectural design had corresponded to Ricardo Magdalena. Later, the Catalan sculptor Agustín Querol offered to cast the sculptural decoration without receiving remuneration. The first stone was laid in 1899. It was also intended to honor the disappearance of the cross from the Coso humiliation , which was destroyed by projectile fire from the Sites of Zaragoza . Thus, the entire sculptural group is topped by the representation of the Coso cross.

Leaning on this cross, the entire monument is topped by a winged angel who holds a fallen Aragonese man in his right arm and points with his left hand to the sky. In the circular body of the central crenellated tower there is a heraldic forging of the Zaragoza shield and at the foot of the entire complex, a female figure crowned with leaves that is an allegory of the city and carries in one hand a crown of victory alluding to immortality. and in the other a parchment or sheet from which hangs a phylactery and pending seal that represents the history of the Aragonese capital. This figure was described by Julián Gállego for its "sizzling surfaces and planes that cover the majestic nudity (...)".

The architectural support is built as a large pedestal representing a fortified keep, similar to the one Miguel Aguado designed for the statue of María Cristina de Borbón near the Casón del Buen Retiro in Madrid .

From an octagonal base at its base, it transitions to a circular one for the central body, which takes the form of a crenellated tower and supports on its front a laureate heraldic shield of palm and olive trees of the city. Before the crenellated body of the ashlar area there is a ring of victory palms with the inscription VICTRIX CESARAUGUSTAE PIETAS INNUMERIS MARTIRIBUS PRO FIDE ET PATRIA (The mercy of the victorious Zaragoza to the countless martyrs of the faith and the country)."
