The Halfmoon Reef began its service on July 1, 1858. It was a hexagon structure placed upon seven twenty-five foot piles that were screwed into the shoul to a depth of 9 feet. The light was a sixth-order Fresnal lens with a red lense to distinguish it from the nearby Matagorda Island Lighthouse.

In 1942, after being damaged by a hurricane, it was taken out of service. It was sold and removed to be used as quarters for the nightwatchman at a dredging business. It was donated to the Calhoun County Historical Commission in 1978 and placed at its current location in 1985.
