The Arch is an impressive archway marking the symbolic beginning of the 20km sacbé (causeway) to Uxmal. It was likely built between 670 and 770 CE. They say it is the largest freestanding Mayan arch!

El Arco es una impresionante arcada que marca el inicio simbólico de los 20 km de sacbé (calzada) a Uxmal. Probablemente se construyó entre los años 670 y 770 de la era cristiana. Dicen que es el arco maya independiente más grande.

El Arca de Kabah es una figura emblemática de esta ciudad. Se trata de una construcción del Estilo Puuc Tempr leventa a mane Arco del Triunfo; no habitable, sino simbólica, y marca el inicio del Socbé (calsada) a Uxmal. De acuerdo con su estilo arquitectónico, puede fecharse entre los años 670 y 770 d.C. quizá también el Sacbe pertenezca a esta época. Su decoración exterior es muy sencilla, con muros lisos y pequeñas molduras horizontales, lo que acentúa la importancia del vane. Impresiones de manos de color rojo son aún apreciables directamente sobre los bloques de piedra el interior del Arco. Situada al lado oeste de la Gran Pirámide, esta inusual construcción constituye junto con aquella un punto focal de la vida ceremonial de la ciudad. Su tamaño monumental y la sobriedad y elegancia de sus fineas hacen del Arco de Kabah un legro magistral de la arquitectura maya y una obra de arte incomparable.


The arch

The Ark of Kabah is an emblematic figure of this city. It is a construction of the Puuc Tempr style, built in the style of the Arch of Triumph; it is not habitable, but symbolic, and marks the beginning of the Socbé (calsada) to Uxmal. According to its architectural style, it can be dated between the years 670 and 770 A.D. Perhaps also the Sacbe belongs to this time. Its exterior decoration is very simple, with smooth walls and small horizontal moldings, which accentuates the importance of the vane. Impressions of red handprints are still visible directly on the stone blocks inside the Arch. Located on the west side of the Great Pyramid, this unusual construction constitutes together with the Great Pyramid a focal point of the ceremonial life of the city. Its monumental size and the sobriety and elegance of its finery make the Arch of Kabah a masterpiece of Maya architecture and an incomparable work of art.
