The oldest live-stage theatre in Montevideo, locate in the Ciudad Viejo district.
The concept of a national theatre in Montevideo dates to about 1833, when a group of local bu7sinessmen and politicians began petitioning the government for funding. Approval was finally obtained by 1840.
The Italian architect Carlo Zocchi designed the building. Construction began in the 1840's with the grand opening in 1856. The building is named after Juan Díaz de Solís who was the first European explorer to land in modern day Uruguay.
The theatre features elements seen in Italian theatres of the era. The elliptical concert hall is reminiscent of La Scala in Milan, for example.
The theatre received a reconstruction between 1998 and 2004.
Of note is that the theatre hosted Tomás Giribaldi's La Parisina, considered the first Uruguayan national opera, on 14 September 1878.
