On the wall of the Casa do Povo (community center) of Moncarapacho there is a plaque honoring the soldiers of Milicias de Moncarapacho (local militia) led by captain Manuel Madeira and by the ensign Leonardo Palermo de Faria who fought the French in the events of 18th June 1808.

In that day the Portuguese resistance won a decisive victory against the French occupation troops which ultimately led to the liberation of the region.
