In 1998, by decree of Pope John Paul II, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies was elevated to the dignity of Minor Basilica, being the only one in the State of Mexico with that category. It is located in the Los Remedios National Park.
It is believed that the image that is kept inside was brought by one of Hernán Cortés' soldiers, who on the so-called Sad Night hid it at the top of a cué (an indigenous shrine) on the then Otomcapulco hill (which means "where the Otomí abound"), where the sanctuary is currently located. In 1540 the indigenous Ce Cuautli found it under a maguey tree.
Like the temple, this image has had great religious and historical relevance. Along with the basilicas of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Nuestra Señora de la Piedad Huehuetlán and Nuestra Señora de la Bala, it maintained a dedication to the symbolic protection of Mexico City.
It has an events hall, garden area, monks' school, an open-air chapel as well as a long atrium and a fabulous view of the Valley of Mexico.
The festival in honor of the Virgin of Remedies takes place every September 1.
