"Built for defensive purposes by the Muslims in the territory of the Caliphate of Córdoba, Cuenca is a fortified medieval city in an excellent state of preservation. Once conquered by the Castilians in the 13th century, it became a royal city and episcopal see, multiplying then the construction of buildings of great value, such as the first Gothic cathedral in Spain and the famous hanging houses, suspended at the top of the gorge of the Huécar River. Excellently located, this fortress city is the highlight of the magnificent rural and natural landscape that surrounds it."
