Up until 2013, it was common to refer to the city by the initialism "DF" from "Distrito Federal de México".
Mexico City's name was changed from "Mexico Distrito Federal" to "Ciudad de México" (CDMX) on January 29, 2016.
The change in the city's name was also used as a rebranding campaign in order to increase tourism revenue, and present the city as a world-class place.
The city government assigned the local Ministry of Tourism the functions to design a logo with a contemporary design for the CDMX acronym.
Since then this sign has been used for tourism campaigns that give identity to the city and these giant letters have been placed in different parts of the city.
