"This is also the name of this minor culverin, an ancient piece of wrought iron artillery, widely used in the 15th century. Both because of its length and its weight, it was a multipurpose weapon, since it was used both in the sites of castles and fortresses. as in the campaign. Due to these characteristics, it gave rise to two types of fire mouths: the smaller ones, which were used manually and became known as harquebuses; and the larger ones, like this model that we see at the bottom of the text, which is became true pieces of artillery. Their caliber was between 22 and 70 mm, and their length between 1.5 and 2.80 meters. Their projectiles were spherical iron balls lined with lead or small carved stones, like the large bolaños that the Lombards threw. The entire shaft of the blowpipe was tightly attached to a support by ropes, and this, in turn, was supported by a light but robust wooden gun carriage with iron fittings.
One of the first pieces of information about this war device dates back to 1440, when it was inventoried in a count in Catalonia. Regarding Castile, it is known that it was already used by the Portuguese in the battle of Toro in 1476.
As is known, when work was carried out to build the tunnel for the Madrid Metro, several of these war devices were found underground, which apparently were used as tubes to convey water in this city. The Madrid Army Museum has a wide repertoire of blowguns in its exhibit halls."
