La catedral está dedicada a los santos Felipe Apóstol y Santiago el Justo , y ha sido la sede del arzobispo de Sorrento-Castellammare di Stabia desde 1986. Anteriormente fue la sede de los obispos y arzobispos de Sorrento.

Se construyó por primera vez alrededor del siglo XI y fue reconstruido en el siglo XV en estilo románico.
