Duarte Pacheco was an engineer and a statesman. He was born in Loulé on the 19th April 1900 and died in a tragic car accident on the 15th November 1943.

He distinguished himself as a minister of the Public Works, and he was responsible for most of the biggest works in Portugal in the 30's and early 40's, namely the first motorway in the country and a monumental stadium which it's still in use.

This broken column, inaugurated in 1953, represents his life and death, with a carved image of every field in which he intervened: roads, stadiums, harbors, etc. And the top of it, non-finished, represents the abrupt end of his life, and all the unfinished works he was leading by then.
