Annie Morris
BRONZE STACK 9,
VIRIDIAN GREEN
BRONZE, 2023

'To me, Wakefield is bound by a cultural consciousness. It has a strong sense of community, belonging and togetherness. The West Yorkshire History Centre holds records of births, marriages and deaths dating back to the 12th century. These are symbolic themes echoed in my work from vulnerability and strength, grief and renewal, hope, uncertainty, rebirth and creativity.'
- Annie Morris

Annie is known for her stacked, coloured, sculptures, as well as tapestries and works on paper. She has made art since childhood and is interested in the key elements of shapes, lines and colours. Annie's work and life were changed by the deep grief of losing a son at nearly full term due to still birth, and the death of her mother-in-law. Colour disappeared from her work and she focused on a form that reminded her of her pregnant body. Colour gradually returned and her iconic stacked sculptures are symbols of all the experiences and emotions we have through life. Bronze Stack 9, Viridian Green is inspired by Annie's sense of Wakefield and the district. The colours reflect the vivid blues, deep reds and vibrant greens of the busy city as well as the stunning landscapes beyond. Annie plans her sculptures by drawing them. Models are then made in her studio before being cast in a foundry.
