The small and relatively short river Loån, just over a kilometer long, connects the two lakes Viren and Losjön. The difference in height was used for the historic “Wira Bruk” ironworks to drive the machines with hydropower. The ironworks began operations in 1635 and was finally closed in 1960.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the dam required for operation and the intensive mill operation meant that the sea trout and salmon that had existed until then could no longer overcome the difference in altitude. Around 1940, a new population of sea trout was settled in the area and a wooden structure was built to ensure that the fish could reach the upper lake.

In October 2011, a new stone fish ladder was built to replace this wooden structure, which did not work well for the sea trout. The current design takes into account the jumping ability of the sea trout and ensures that there is enough water for transfer even when the water level in the upper lake is low.
