The very word "cathedra," in Latin and Greek, means "chair." Every cathedral houses the chair of the local bishop, the seat of office for the diocesan bishop. From the cathedra, the chair or seat, the bishop teaches, sanctifies, and guides the People of God, the Church. From the cathedral, the mother church of the diocese housing the bishop's chair, the bishop oversees and safeguards the life of the Catholic people. The cathedra is the symbol of the bishop's authority.
There is a chair or cathedra in every diocese, in every Local Church. From his chair, the bishop gathers the people of his diocese. Our Diocese is comprised of eight counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania: Somerset, Bedford, Fulton, Cambria, Blair, Huntingdon, Centre, and Clinton. Like a shepherd, the bishop brings together his flock into the Cathedral. He instructs, encourages, sometimes admonishes, but always challenges them, grounded in the witness of Holy Scripture. It is here in the Cathedral that believers drink of the rich reserve of the Catholic tradition. Gathered with their bishop, the baptized assemble to celebrate the Mystery of Faith, the Eucharist.
The cathedra of our Cathedral is the original marble chair placed in 1960. Moved from the niche behind the ambo in 1989, the chair is located more in the midst of the apse of the Cathedral. The glass design behind the seat of the bishop has won recognition for creative design. The cathedra contains the combined coat of arms of the diocese and the coat of arms of hte particular bishop of the diocese.
