Daniel Solander (1733-1782) was born on 19 February 1733 at Piteä in Norrland, Swedenn It is likely that he received much of his education from his father before enrolling at the University of Uppsala in July 1750. Solander studied languages and the humanities and attended lectures delivered by his uncle, Daniel Solander, who was professor of law. The professor of botany was the celebrated Linnaeus (Carl von Linné) who was soon impressed by young Solander's ability and accordingly persuaded his father to let him study natural history. In 1756 Solander edited Linnaeus's Elementa Botanica.

Solander was engaged by Joseph Banks to join him as part of the scientific team on James Cook's first voyage to the Pacific.

On his return to England, Solander began to classify their finds using hte Linnean classification but to Linnaeus's appointment he continued to explore rather than devote himself to promoting the classification system,

The initial support on Linnaeus was integral to the promotion of Solander to the international naturalist community.

This monument was erected by the Swedish community to commemorate the important role of Daniel Solander in European understanding of Australia.
