"The first knockers appear to have been small mallets suspended externally from door frames. In the 16th century, knockers in the shape of a ring or loop, with a weight at the end, were used for the doors of hotels and houses.

This one is characteristic of the 18th century, it is in the shape of a hand (quite thin) holding a ball (which acts as a knocker). It is made of cast iron and located on one of the doors of the former Hôtel des Polignac (15th century) and which hosted the Prefecture of Haute-Loire from 1800 to 1825."

Celui-ci est caractéristique du 18ème siècle, il est en forme de main (assez fine) tenant une boule (ce qui lui serre de heurtoir). Il est en fonte et situé sur une des portes de l'ancien Hôtel des Polignac (15ème siècle) et qui accueillera la Préfecture de la Haute-Loire de 1800 à 1825."
