In 1968 Switzerland issued the second series of the Motifs and Monuments stamps in 1968. The 30 Rappen stamp was of the village square of Gais in Appenzell, printed in red. The classic Appenzeller architecture of wooden houses with curved gables is represented in the stamp and in the photo. The village square was rebuilt following a fire in 1780 and has remained mostly unchanged since then, perhaps with some renovation, upkeep and a fresh paint job.
