South Dakota, North Dakota, Washington and Montana all became states in 1889. It took South Dakota a while to pick the location of their capital city and by the time they had decided on Pierre, the state of Montana had already completed their lovely neoclassical capitol building. Admiring Montana’s new capitol, South Dakota used the same architect, Charles Emlen Bell, to design theirs and as a result, South Dakota’s capitol is quite similar to Montana’s.
In between the sixteen pillars supporting the dome are depictions of the ‘Tree of Life’ and pasque flowers, the state flower of South Dakota. The stained glass of the dome is backlit with artificial lighting as most of the sky lights were removed when the copper dome was replaced in the mid-1960s. Guided and self-guided tours are available during the week and on weekends.
