Garibaldi is known as the "Hero of the Two Worlds", in tribute to his military expeditions in South America and Europe. In Brazil and took up the cause of independence of the Republic of Rio Grande do Sul (the former Brazilian province of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul), joining the gaucho rebels known as the farrapos (tatters) against the newly independent Brazilian nation.
