The current Wisconsin State Capitol is the fourth capitol building in the state and the third in Madison. Built between 1906 and 1917, it replaced the former capitol which had been destroyed by fire in 1904. It was designed by noted architect George B. Post, known for his work at the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, the New York Stock Exchange and many early skyscrapers in New York City.

Allegorical representations of Wisconsin are found both on top of the dome and underneath it. Daniel Chester French created the gilt statue of ‘Wisconsin’ that’s perched atop the dome. The female figure resembles a Greek goddess except for the badger on top of her head. French would go on to create the monumental statue of Lincoln in Washington, DC.

The painting inside the dome is by muralist Edwin Howland Bashfield, who also did work for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. In the painting, Wisconsin is represented by a woman in the clouds, surrounded by other women holding products of the state including tobacco, grapes, copper and lead (but no cheese) all draped in an American flag. It’s painted on the inside of a spherical section about 34 ft. in diameter and 13 ft. high. The mural was created in sections and assembled in the dome like a jigsaw puzzle.
